Kenya

While I was was in Kenya speaking at the first AfriCHI conference, I had the honor of going to Kibera, the largest slum in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Kibera houses about 250,000 souls in very challenging living situations.  The resiliency and creativity of the people there is humbling and inspiring, and there are many examples of how these express themselves in all aspects of life.  One example is M-Maji, a co-designed system to help women collect water daily.  Women can text their location to a server which will then identify up-to-date information from the water-sellers in the area with type (e.g. purified, etc) and cost of water that sellers have also texted to the system.  This minimizes women's travel to get water, and helps optimize their day.
